 AUTHENTICITY-Porta's Karate-Do & Kobudo Academy was established in 1966 by Sensei John Porta. The Academy offers programs in three martial arts: Karate, Kobudo (traditional Okinawan weapons), and Tai Chi Chuan. Sensei Porta holds an 8th degree black belt in Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate, and was awarded the rank of Kyoshi. He trained, and was awarded his rank teaching certification, in Okinawa by Master Masanobu Shinjo, the late president of the All Okinawa Goju-Ryu Goju-Kai, Master Miyagi's (founder of Goju-Ryu Karate-Do) original organization, and the All Okinawa Karate-Do Federation, the main governing organization for Okinawan karate. Sensei Porta is also a member of, and is an instructor with, the All Okinawa Kobudo Federation, Okinawa's major traditional weapons training organization who is currently headed by its founder Master Shimpo Matayoshi, 10th degree black belt. All ranking of students at Porta's Karate-Do & Kobudo Academy is of the highest standards, and is sanctioned and certified by authentic martial arts organization from Okinawa, Japan.

QUALITY-All programs at Porta's Academy are taught, supervised, or directed by Sensei Porta. All assistant instructors, and class instructors, under go an intensive assistant instructor training program in which proficiency in instruction must be maintained. This insures the the quality of all programs remains high. Because of the quality of training, for over twenty-five years Porta's Karate-Do & Kobudo Academy has been selected as the school of choice for providing instruction for most every area Adult Education and Children's Recreations programs. Because of the outstanding contribution to the community, May 16, 1993 was proclaimed by the the Mayor of Wayne, New Jersey, to be "Porta's Karate-Do & Kobudo Academy Day" throughout the township. Sensei Porta has been featured in Who's Who in American Martial Arts, and in Masters, Founders, and Leaders in American Martial Arts. Porta's Academy has been well-known for its "assurance of quality" since 1966. Programs are often recommended by area physicians, clergymen, and educators.

EXPERIENCE-Sensei Porta began training in 1954. He was a special self-defense instructor for the United States Treasury Department from 1958 through 1966, at which time he founded Porta's Karate-Do & Kobudo Academy. He has designed, taught, and directed most of the area's Adult Education, Children's Recreation Programs, and College Karate Courses throughout the area. In 1990 he was appointed as the United States Representative for the Okinawa Goju-Ryu Shobukan Organization, over-seeing affiliate schools throughout the United States. In 1990 and again in 1992, he headed the United States delegations to Okinawa, Japan, which participated in the World-Wide Karate and Kobudo Festivals, and was interviewed on a number of Japan's national television programs. He was presented with a plaque by the major of Okinawa City, Japan, for being an "Outstanding Karate Instructor." Students at Porta's Academy have the opportunity to have both national and international exposure in authentic martial arts events.

VALUE-Although Porta's Karate-Do & Kobudo Academy has the highest certification and quality of instruction, membership rates are well below the national average. There are a variety of programs and memberships from which to choose. The Academy also offers FREE introductory training classes, as well as family discount rates.
